Wockhardt Antibiotic Academy, an initiative for Patient - Centric Scientific Dialogue to Tackle Multidrug Resistance

Since the discovery of penicillin nearly a century ago and despite the introduction of more than 300 antibiotics, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has continued to emerge and accelerate, posing one of the greatest threats to global public healthcare. Around 10 lakh patients annually die in India due to multi-drug-resistant infections more than four times the number of Indian lives lost annually during the COVID-19 pandemic.

"There is an urgent need not only to have a new antibiotic like Zaynich, but also to have a science-based platform that fosters constructive dialogue on antimicrobial resistance and its appropriate management. It is essential to use the right antibiotic for the right patient at the right time. We hope this Academy will create a deeper understanding of the current realities of drug resistance and promote evidence-based solutions that enable clinicians to save patients' lives." - Dr. Habil Khorakiwala, Founder Chairman, Wockhardt.

The Wockhardt Antibiotic Academy is an open scientific learning platform accessible to the registered medical fraternity across India. It aims to facilitate continuous medical education through the exchange of knowledge, scientific discussions, and the sharing of real-world clinical experience among healthcare professionals.

"Resistance is not solved by guidelines alone. It is solved at the patient's bedside, one clinical decision at a time. Those decisions improve when physicians learn from one another and build evidence together. Antimicrobial stewardship continues to evolve. Practices that were considered appropriate a decade ago have been refined by new evidence on diagnosis, dosing, treatment duration and de-escalation. Any initiative that brings clinicians together to exchange knowledge and remain closely connected to science is a step in the right direction. Resistant organisms must be defeated-and patients must win." - Dr. Subramaniam Swaminathan, President Clinical Infectious Diseases Society, India.

The Academy reflects Wockhardt's belief that advancing the fight against antimicrobial resistance requires a shared platform where knowledge, experience, and evidence can come together. Our contribution is to convene, enable, and invest in that dialogue. The science, however, belongs to the community that advances it, and to the clinicians who translate it into better outcomes for patients around the world. This Academy is the first step in building a nationwide scientific movement. Wockhardt hopes to collaborate with clinicians across the country to strengthen the fight against antimicrobial resistance. Ultimately, the true measure of success will be the number of patients whose lives are saved through better-informed clinical decisions.

"Every breakthrough antibiotic is only the beginning. Its true value emerges through robust evidence and the judgement built by clinicians caring for patients every day. As a company dedicated to discovering, developing, and providing antibiotics, we recognise that we are part of both the challenge and the solution." - Ms. Annapurna Das, President, India & NCE Emerging Markets.

Wockhardt will continue to contribute its scientific expertise while facilitating interactions with leading national and international experts in infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance and antimicrobial stewardship. Clinicians, scientific societies, hospitals and policymakers are invited to participate in the Academy, contribute their expertise and help shape this collaborative initiative - because patients must win, and life must win.
