KIMS Icon hospital creates history - Successfully performs complex kidney surgery

KIMS Icon doctors create a new history by completing a complex kidney surgery. They strived for more than 12 hours to perform this surgery. Dr Murali krishna Padyala, consultant urologist, KIMS Icon hospitals explain to the media the condition of the patient and the need for this surgery.

Vanapalli Sivaparasad, aged 46 of Vizag city is a bank employee. He had a kidney stones problem in 1999. Doctors performed open surgery and extracted the stones. The same problem arised in 2001 again. Then he went to Delhi for better medical care. They opened the same hole, which was made earlier and extracted the stones, and made stenting too. But, for the past a few months, pus started leaking from that hole. Initially, they waited for it to stop by itself, but the problem aggravated. They approached several hospitals and at last came to KIMS Icon hospitals.

We took a scan of the kidney and were astonished to know that the pus from the kidney got stuck to the intestine and other parts of the abdomen including Inferior vena cava which is a major blood vessel carrying blood to the heart. The right kidney also became non functioning. Because of multiple surgeries and recurrent stones, it got infected badly and formed a nephrocutaneous fistula along with dense adhesions to the surrounding organs in the abdomen. The patient suffered a lot because of this. In such a condition, to save the life of the patient, we had to remove the failed right kidney.

We have performed a surgery called right nephrectomy with inferior veina caval repair. The surgery took more than 12 hours. Initially, we have removed the pus that came from the kidney and separated the other organs like large and small bowel that were densely adherent. The major artery which supplies blood to the heart also got infected. So, we took the help of cardio thoracic surgeon Dr Sai Manikandan. We have completely removed the right side kidney. Completed the surgery and saved the life of the patient. The patient is completely recovered now and doing his regular chores.
