Sri Lanka Crush Minnows Canada

Sri Lanka crushed minnows Canada by 210 runs in their first world cup match. The match was played at Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium, Sooriyawewa, Hambantota in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bat first. The home team began well and the openers Tharanga and Dilshan put on 63 runs, before Tharanga was run out after scoring 19 runs from 31 balls. Sangakkara joined Dilshan and Dilshan soon perished with score at 88 in the 20th over. Dilshan was out for 50 runs from 59 balls with 8 boundaries (4s).

Captain Sangakkara and veteran batsman Jayawardene played very well and put on a partnership of 179 runs. Sangakkara was out for 92 runs from 87 balls with 7 boundaries (4s) and 1 Six (6s). Jayawardene was out for 100 runs in 81 balls with 9 boundaries (4s) and 1 Six (6).

Perera, Mathews, Kapugedera, Samaraweera and Kulasekara were the other players who took Sri Lanka's score to 332 with loss of 7 wickets in their 50 overs.

H S Baidwan and Davison both claimed 2 wickets each. Rizwan Cheema also took 1 wicket.

Canada began their innings shakily and were bundled out for 122 runs in 36.5 overs. Rizwan Cheema was the top scorer for Canada with 37 runs from 35 balls with 4 boundaries (4s) and 2 Six (6s).

For Sri Lanka, Kulasekara and Perera both claimed 3 wickets each. Muralitharan took 2 wickets, Mendis and Samaraweera both claimed a wicket each.

Mahela Jayawardene from Sri Lanka was adjudged Player of the Match.
