Apollo Micro Systems Limited (AMS) today announced that it has been awarded a Make-II Prototype Sanction Order (PSO) by the Indian Navy for the development of the SAVIOR-ASW the SemiSubmersible Autonomous Vessel for Intelligence, Operations and Reconnaissance. This award marks AMS's formal entry into the rapidly expanding domain of autonomous maritime and underwater warfare systems, and stands as one of the most significant indigenous defence technology milestones in the company's history.

What is the Make-II PSO?

The Make-II category is one of India's most progressive defence procurement pathways under the Defence Acquisition Procedure (DAP). Indian companies are invited to develop fully funded indigenous prototypes of advanced military systems with the Government committing to procure successful prototypes at scale. A Prototype Sanction Order is the formal green light to begin this development, backed by the full procurement intent from the Indian Navy.

What is the SAVIOR-ASW System?

SAVIOR-ASW is India's first indigenously developed semi-submersible autonomous vessel designed specifically for Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) surveillance. It is an unmanned, self-powered maritime platform, yet capable of patrolling the ocean independently for longer period. It operates silently beneath the sea surface, using a sophisticated hydrophone array to listen for submarines and underwater threats, and transmits intelligence continuously to Naval command centres ashore and aboard ships entirely without human presence onboard.

Why This Matters for India's Strategic Security?

The Indian Ocean lies at the heart of the Indian Ocean Region (IOR), one of the world's most strategically important maritime corridors and a vital artery of global commerce. Nearly 100,000 merchant vessels transit its waters each year, carrying around 30% of global containerized cargo and 42% of the world's crude oil traded from and within the region. The region is also home to several of the world's busiest ports and major shipping fleets, while its abundant marine and mineral resources further reinforce its economic importance. - Conventional ASW frigates cost several thousand crore rupees to build and require substantial operating and maintenance expenditure over their service life. - Instead of deploying expensive frontline warships for routine surveillance, a fleet of SAVIOR-ASW vessels can monitor vast maritime areas autonomously for extended periods, allowing high-value naval assets to focus on combat and strategic missions.

- Multiple autonomous platforms can be deployed simultaneously to provide wider underwater coverage than a limited number of manned warships, improving surveillance density without proportionally increasing costs.
