Ashok Leyland Secures ₹222.65 Crore Arbitral Award Against Delhi Transport Corporation

Commercial vehicle major Ashok Leyland Limited (NSE: ASHOKLEY, BSE: 500477) has announced that an Arbitral Tribunal in New Delhi has ruled in its favor, awarding the company a principal sum of ₹222.65 crore in a long-standing contract dispute with the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC).

Origin of the Long-Standing Dispute

The dispute traces back to a commercial contract executed between 2009 and 2011, during which Ashok Leyland supplied a fleet of passenger buses to the DTC under a public tender. Following the execution of the supply contracts, disputes arose regarding unpaid invoices and outstanding dues, leading Ashok Leyland to raise commercial claims against the transport body.

After initial resolutions stalled, the automotive manufacturer formally initiated arbitration proceedings against the DTC in 2013 to recover its dues. The case involved substantial stakes from both parties:

Original Claim by Ashok Leyland: ₹445 crore

Counterclaim by DTC: ₹136 crore

The Tribunal's Rulings and Financial Multipliers

In its majority award dated July 6, 2026, the Arbitral Tribunal partially allowed Ashok Leyland's claims, directing the DTC to pay a principal sum of ₹222.65 crore (approximately 50% of the manufacturer's original claim).

Crucially for Ashok Leyland's financial upside, the tribunal outright rejected the entire ₹136 crore counterclaim brought forward by the DTC. Furthermore, the tribunal applied several significant financial add-ons to the principal payout:

Interest Framework: The tribunal awarded interest at the rate of 10% per annum. This interest is applicable cumulatively across three distinct phases: the pre-arbitration phase, the pendente lite period (the duration of the legal proceedings since 2013), and from the date of the award until the final payment is cleared.

Legal Expenses: The panel directed the DTC to reimburse Ashok Leyland a sum of ₹2.96 crore to cover its accumulated legal costs.

Next Steps and Internal Assessment

While the ruling represents a significant victory, Ashok Leyland stated that the exact total financial implication is currently being ascertained. Because the 10% annual interest applies across a multi-year litigation timeline stretching back to 2013, the final gross payout to the company will be considerably higher than the ₹222.65 crore principal.

"The Company is in the process of reviewing the contents of the award, ascertaining the final award amount inclusive of interest, and considering available options for the remaining amount claimed but not awarded."

Shares of Ashok Leyland Limited was last trading in BSE at Rs. 157.55 as compared to the previous close of Rs. 155.25. The total number of shares traded during the day was 710893 in over 9023 trades.

The stock hit an intraday high of Rs. 157.75 and intraday low of 155.80. The net turnover during the day was Rs. 111508468.00.
