Coal India Announces Provisional Production and Off-take Performance for May 2026: Total Off-take Climbs to 66.7 Million Tonnes

Maharatna public sector undertaking Coal India Limited (CIL) has released its provisional coal production and off-take performance metrics for May 2026 and the cumulative April-May 2026 period. The data highlights a mixed performance, featuring a controlled contraction in monthly output alongside a steady 2.2% expansion in coal supply dispatches (off-take) to consumers.

Coal Production Insights: Subsidiary Analysis

During May 2026, Coal India's consolidated production reached 56.1 million tonnes, registering an 11.6% decline compared to the 63.5 million tonnes produced in May 2025. Cumulatively, for the first two months of the 2026-27 fiscal year, CIL's total output stood at 112.2 million tonnes, down 10.6% from 125.6 million tonnes in the corresponding prior period.

The output patterns across individual subsidiary companies during May 2026 showed varying trends:

South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL): Remained the highest producer for the month, ramping up its output by 4.5% to reach 14.4 million tonnes compared to 13.8 million tonnes last year.

Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL): Followed closely, contributing 14.3 million tonnes to the total basket, though it recorded a 20.1% decline against the 17.9 million tonnes produced in May 2025.

Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL): Registered a production of 9.5 million tonnes, down 23.7% from 12.4 million tonnes in the previous year's matching period.

Central Coalfields Limited (CCL): Kept pace evenly with last year's performance, producing 6.2 million tonnes-reflecting a minor increase of 0.4%.

Western Coalfields Limited (WCL): Produced 5.6 million tonnes, indicating an 8.4% drop from the 6.1 million tonnes output logged in May 2025.

Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL): Dipped 3.6% to finish the month at 3.9 million tonnes versus 4.0 million tonnes previously.

Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL): Contracted by 25.5%, yielding 2.3 million tonnes against 3.1 million tonnes last year.

North Eastern Coalfields (NEC): Minimal mining activity was observed, recording close to zero production compared to 0.05 million tonnes last May.

On a year-to-date basis (April-May 2026), SECL and CCL were the only subsidiaries to log positive growth at 6.9% and 0.7% respectively. SECL led the cumulative performance table with 29.7 million tonnes, followed by MCL at 28.0 million tonnes.

Healthy Commercial Demand: Off-take Performance

Despite tighter production schedules, Coal India successfully scaled up its consumer supply lines. Total off-take for May 2026 expanded by 2.2% to 66.7 million tonnes, improving upon the 65.2 million tonnes dispatched in May 2025. Cumulatively, YTD off-take edged up by 0.9% to reach 130.9 million tonnes over the 129.8 million tonnes achieved during the same timeframe last year.

Subsidiary-wise dispatch highlights for May 2026 reveal strong pull factors across key operations:

Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL): Formed the bulk of the dispatches, delivering 18.8 million tonnes to customers, up 5.6% from 17.8 million tonnes last year.

South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL): Successfully pushed out 16.1 million tonnes into the market, climbing 3.1% from 15.6 million tonnes.

Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL): Distributed 10.8 million tonnes, down 8.4% relative to 11.7 million tonnes in the base month.

Central Coalfields Limited (CCL): Showed the highest dispatch growth rate for the month, surging 17.3% to register 7.9 million tonnes over the 6.7 million tonnes logged last year.

Western Coalfields Limited (WCL): Maintained a flat trajectory, inching up 0.7% to touch 5.9 million tonnes.

Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL): Demonstrated resilient consumption links, expanding off-take by 6.4% to reach 4.6 million tonnes.

Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL): Reported dispatches of 2.7 million tonnes, showing a drop of 15.8% compared to the 3.2 million tonnes distributed in May 2025.

For the cumulative April-May 2026 period, ECL (8.5%), CCL (3.3%), SECL (4.0%), and MCL (6.7%) all preserved positive traction in coal off-take, reinforcing stable delivery structures across the national supply chain.

Shares of Coal India Limited was last trading in BSE at Rs. 457.60 as compared to the previous close of Rs. 462.90. The total number of shares traded during the day was 1298646 in over 14394 trades.

The stock hit an intraday high of Rs. 474.20 and intraday low of 456.00. The net turnover during the day was Rs. 601791350.00.
