              Indian markets settled sharply lower on Monday led by capital goods, banking and metal stocks. A weak trend in global markets amid concerns over US fiscal debt ceiling also weighed on the sentiments.
Nifty closed at 5735.30 down by 97.90 points or 1.68% over the previous day closing of 5833.20 after witnessing a low of 5718.50 and a high of 5810.20. Sensex closed at 19379.77 down by 347.50 points or 1.76% over the previous day closing of 19727.27.It touched an intraday low of 19320.73 and high of 19651.31.
The markets' breadth was mixed. Out of 2420 stocks traded 889 stocks advanced, 1396 stocks declined and 135 s t o c k s remained unchanged. In Sensex, Out of 30 stocks 05 stocks advanced and 25 stocks declined.
Among the sectors, BSE Capital Goods, BSE Bankex and BSE Metal were the main gainers of the day which increased by 2.92%, 2.84% and 2.44% respectively.
In BSE Capital Goods sector FAG Bearings, BHEL and IL&FS Trans decreased by 5.38%,4.58% and 4.00% respectively. In BSE Bankex Yes Bank, Union Bank, and Federal Bank declined by 5.63% 4.81% and 4.31% respectively. In BSE Metal sector Tata Steel, NMDC and Coal India decreased by 5.65% 4.41% and 3.92% respectively.
