VSNL International Wins 'Best Pan-Asian Wholesale Provider' at Capacity Magazine's Global Wholesale Telecommunications Awards

Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd (VSNL) has announced that VSNL Singapore Pte Ltd ("VSNL International"), the international arm of the Company received the 'Best Pan-Asian Wholesale Provider’ award at the 4th annual Capacity Magazine Global Wholesale Telecommunications Awards held at the Capacity Europe 2006 show in Amsterdam this week. This award recognizes key market players who, through applying innovation and successful techniques and strategies to their wholesale businesses, have established themselves as leaders in the global wholesale talecoms industry.

The judging panel was comprised of Capacity Magazine's senior editorial staff including Mark Kemp, CEO & Editor-in-Chief and Eira Hayward, Editor, and select senior industry analysts including Camille Mendler, Vice President, International Telecommunications Strategies, Yankee Group, Dr Judy Reed Smith, Founder & CEO, ATLANTIC-ACM, and Stephen Young, Principal Analyst, Ovum, VSNL International was chosen among an impressive list of leading global competitors.

Recent VSNL International strategic ventures included a US$200 Million investment in an intra-Asia Cable system linking Singapore, Hong Kong and Japan as part of major expansion initiative. The intra Asia cable, when combined with the Tata Indicom Cable System (TIC) and the TGN-Pacific cable system (both of which are built with 8 fibre pairs capable of supporting 7 + Tbit/s of traffic), will complete VSNL International's multi-Terabit capability from India to Asia and onward to the US.

VSNL International also upgraded its high capacity Trans-Pacific submarine cable network to a 1 terabit capacity in August 2006 to serve increased customer demand between Asia and the US. The Trans-Pacific Network (TGN-P) connects several key US West Coast Internet and carrier exchanges directly to Japan and onward to other important Asian destinations through multiple regional sub-sea cable interconnections.

Other announcements in the region this year included a new Singapore IP Point of Presence at the Equinix Internet exchange center, and the launch of Dedicated Global Ethernet, its global Ethernet private line service connecting major cities throughout North America, Europe, Asia and an extensive footprint connecting 120 cities in India.

This is the third award for VSNL International in recent months, as the Company was named 'Best Wholesale Carrier' at the 2000 World Communication Awards last week in London, and VSNL's Executive Director N Srinath was also named Telecom Asia's CEO of the Year.
