Himadri Speciality Chemical Announces Triple Capex Drive and India's First In-House Carbon Nano Tubes Plant

In a major push toward high-value specialty materials and localized technology, the Board of Directors of Himadri Speciality Chemical has approved a series of capital expenditure (Capex) investments totaling ₹368 crores. Funded primarily through internal accruals, these initiatives aim to elevate the company's product portfolio, expand production capacities, and establish a pioneering manufacturing footprint for advanced carbon materials in India.

Expanding Anthraquinone and Carbazole Production

Building on its announcement made on January 13, 2025, when the Board initially approved a ₹120 crore capex for a 2,600 Metric Tonnes Per Annum (MTPA) specialty chemical facility, the company has decided to double down on these high-value products.

The Board has greenlit an additional capex of ₹128 crores to expand the planned manufacturing capacity of Anthraquinone and Carbazole to 5,300 MTPA (up from the previously planned 2,600 MTPA).

This expansion will not affect the company's existing overall production capacity. The project will roll out in two distinct operational phases:

Phase 1: An initial capacity of 2,600 MTPA is scheduled to be commissioned by the second quarter of fiscal year 2027 (Q2 FY27).

Phase 2: The remaining capacity of 2,700 MTPA is projected to come online by the second quarter of fiscal year 2028 (Q2 FY28).

Pioneering India's First Indigenous Carbon Nano Tubes (CNT) Facility

In a breakthrough for domestic research and development, Himadri has successfully developed in-house technology to manufacture Carbon Nano Tubes (CNT). To commercialize this innovation, the Board has sanctioned ₹70 crores to set up India's very first in-house developed CNT manufacturing facility in West Bengal.

Scheduled to be commissioned by Q4 FY27, this plant will have an annual production capacity of 200 MT. Entering the CNT sector positions Himadri within an exclusive group of global manufacturers supplying high-growth, high-tech industries. CNTs serve as critical components in:

Electric Vehicles (EVs): As conductive additives for advanced lithium-ion batteries.

Electronics: Utilized in semiconductor manufacturing, conductive films, and sensors.

Composites: Providing lightweight, high-strength structural materials for aerospace and automotive engineering.

Energy Storage: Boosting the performance of batteries, supercapacitors, and fuel cells.

Industrial Coatings and Plastics: Improving electrical conductivity and physical durability.

By localizing this technology, the facility marks a major stride toward reducing India's import dependency, directly aligning with the Union Government's vision of an Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India).

Upgrading to Super Speciality Carbon Black

To further strengthen its leadership in niche industrial applications, the Board has approved a capex of ₹170 crores to manufacture Super Speciality Carbon Black (SSCB).

The project will convert 6,000 MTPA of an existing carbon black stream at the company's Mahistikry facility into high-purity, structurally superior Carbon Black. Because of this strategic conversion, the company's total carbon black capacity of 2,50,000 MTPA (comprising 1,20,000 MTPA of commodity grade and 1,30,000 MTPA of Specialty Carbon Black) remains completely unchanged.

Expected to be commissioned by Q4 FY28, the specialized facility will yield products with superior morphology designed for premium applications. This upgrade is expected to drive higher value realization in high-demand fields, including engineering plastics, conductive applications, fiber premiumization, and the rapidly growing EV and energy storage ecosystem.
