HDFC Tru presents Copper: The Next Leg of the Commodity Supercycle

HDFC Tru has released a primer examining the structural case for Copper as the next major outperformer in the ongoing commodity cycle. The report highlights that while Gold and Silver have already witnessed sharp rallies, Copper continues to trade at multi-decade lows relative to precious metals despite rising demand from AI data centres, EVs, power grids, defence infrastructure, and global electrification trends.

The note further highlights that a decade of underinvestment in mining, declining Copper discoveries, and lower production trends in Chile are tightening global supply conditions at a time when demand continues to accelerate.

According to HDFC Tru, macroeconomic factors including higher-for-longer inflation, de-dollarisation trends, and rising infrastructure spending globally are creating a supportive backdrop for commodities and hard assets.

Looking ahead, the report suggests that the combination of constrained supply, structural demand growth, and historically stretched Copper-to-Gold and Copper-to-Silver ratios could support a long-term structural re-rating in Copper prices.
