Blood-bath on Indian stock exchanges - BSE tanks 462.91 points

There was blood on Indian Stock Exchanges - Bombay Stock Exchange and National Stock Exchange as investors booked profits across the board after the recent surge in the markets. Metal stocks were the major losers with most of them closing in red.

In NIFTY, out of 50 stocks there was not even 1 gainer and same was the case with 30 stocks Sensex. BSE Sensex crashed by 462.91 points to close at 11822.20. Sensex had hit an intraday high of 12272.64 and low of 11770.76.

NIFTY hit an intraday high of 3653 and low of 3482.85 before closing at 3502.95, down by 147.1 points.

Metal stocks were hammered across the board. HINDALCO was the major loser in NIFTY with the stock closing at Rs.209.6, down by 13.69% over its previous close of Rs.242.85. The stock hit an intraday high of Rs.244 and low of Rs.205.95. 15781775 shares were traded during the day.

National Aluminium (NALCO) was the second major loser in NIFTY with the stock closing down by 11.38% at Rs.288.2. 1360100 shares of NALCO changed hands during the day resulting in a turnover of Rs.4080.71 Lakhs. NALCO touched an intraday high of Rs.328 before tanking to hit an intraday low of Rs.280.05.

Dabur India (Rs.152.85, down by 10.4%) and VSNL (Rs.431.75, down by 10.05%) were the other major losers in NIFTY losing more than 10%. Tata Steel closed the day at Rs.586.65, down by 8.88%. The stock had a turnover of Rs.58915.39 Lakhs during the day with 9610320 shares changing hands. The stock hit a high of Rs.647 and low of Rs.572.35 during the day.

IPCL was the other major loser in NIFTY with the stock closing down by 8.13% at Rs.254.4.

Glaxo and SAIL lost 7.48% and 7.46% respectively to close at Rs.1307.5 and Rs.85.

MTNL (Rs.192.45, down by 5.98%), Grasim (Rs.2125.3, down by 5.62%), SCI (Rs.155.8, down by 5.55%), ABB (Rs.2998.3, down by 5.41%), ITC (Rs.191, down by 5.21%), Maruti (Rs.885.75, down by 5.04%) lost more than 5% during the day.

Stocks that lost more than 4% include, HPCL, Tata Motors, Tata Chemicals, L&T, Gujarat Ambuja Cement, Reliance Industries, Hindustan Lever. HCL Technologies, ACC, Bajaj Auto, M&M, Cipla, ONGC, HDFC Bank, SBI, GAIL, BHEL, Reliance Energy closed the day losing more than 3%.

Bharti Tele, Hero Honda, Oriental Bank of Commerce, BPCL, Infosys Technologies, ICICI Bank, Dr Reddys Laboratories, Ranbaxy Laboratories, Jet Airways, Sun Pharma, Satyam Computers lost more than 2% during the day.

Tata Tea, HDFC, WIPRO, TCS, Tata Power, Zee Tele and Punjab National Bank completes the list of NIFTY losers.
