Global travel search engine Skyscanner has run its first broadcast on Twitter's new live streaming app, Periscope. The #24hPeriscope campaign was designed to test out the new technology and see how it could be used to offer a richer experience for travellers looking for inspiration.
Planned in just five days, the hourly broadcast that culminated into a 24 hour session, brought together 19 travel bloggers from around the world, including Rakhee Ghelani from India, along with the Skyscanner team to share insider tips and knowledge of their country, live with travellers tuning in from around the world. The broadcast offered insights from 22 cities around the world, all the way from Toronto to Tokyo. Rakhee Ghelani, an avid traveller and popular travel blogger, exhibited the cosmopolitan city of Mumbai to the world within 60 minutes, through the #24hPeriscope campaign. Her journey began at the Gateway of India located on the shores of Arabian Sea, which was followed by her escapades through the Colaba Causeway that offers a shopping carnival experience through the year with hundreds of street shopping stalls. After making a stop at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, she explored the Marine Drive, known for the most beautifully laid boulevards in southern part of Mumbai, finally concluding her journey at the famous Haji Ali Dargah.
Skyscanner provides travel tips and insight to people around the world through its travel news and features which is read by 10 million people each month. With close to 300k followers on its global Twitter accounts, and a focus on delivering travel inspiration, Skyscanner was also able to reach 1.6m users with the campaign, generating 1.2k tweets with #24hPeriscope becoming a trending hashtag on the day.
Sam Poullain, social media manager at Skyscanner comments: "We're always looking to find new ways in which we can share inspiration with travellers around the world and we were immediately drawn to the possibilities offered by the Periscope app when it launched. We wanted to see whether the app could bring destinations to life through the eyes of local travel experts through a series of live broadcasts in 23 cities around the world over 24 hours.
"It is a new technology which brought its own challenges, and we were working to tight deadlines but have been impressed with the results we generated. Working with an enthusiastic network of 19 travel bloggers around the world, the feedback on our 24 project exceeded our expectations with over 23 thousand people tuning in. We certainly think there a demand for live video streaming to bring destinations to life in real-time and make finding inspiration on where to travel more immediate as well as fun and are looking at ways we can explore this new channel further."
