- The sudden rise in temperature will further boost demand for Air conditioner (ACs), inverters, generators and coolers ranging between 40%, 35%, 30% and 25% respectively in Delhi and National Capital Region this summer, according to the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM).
The Survey team interviewed 150 shopkeepers each in Delhi, Ghaziabad, Noida, Gurgaon, Faridabad, Greater Noida, Bhadurgarh, and Sonepat, among other cities. The maximum sale of ACs was noticed in Delhi closely followed by Gurgaon.
ASSOCHAM'S Secretary General D S Rawat said that after a gap of 2-3 years, the demand of ACs sales in Delhi-NCR have seen a sharp upward trend because of the intense heat waves.
Shedding light on the air-condition segment, ASSOCHAM said the domestic air-conditioner segment has been growing at 35% annually and will rise to 45% this season. Split air-conditioner units currently comprise about 70% of the market base. The Indian residential market for air conditioners has been fixed at 30 lakh units per year. While the domestic AC market is estimated at Rs 8,500 crore, Delhi-NCR has a Rs 3,500-crore share, adds the survey.
- The Sales of desert coolers have also jumped by over 20-25%, according to a sample survey carried out by industry chamber across retail outlets in Delhi, Ghaziabad, Noida, Gurgaon, Faridabad, Greater Noida, Bahadurgarh and Sonepat.
- The demand for inverters, batteries and generators will rise by 30-35% as the NCR is unlikely to be supplied power either from neighbouring regions or far-off power producing regions, says a recent survey.
- ACs sales, that were slow last year due to new energy efficient norms and hike in excise duty, have picked up in double digits this season, added Mr. Rawat.
- The AC market is expected to increase by 40-45% this year as the consumers are now buying ACs not just for cooling but for overall comfort. They prefer more energy efficient products and air conditioners are among the top consumer durables on their priority list, reveals the ASSOCHAM survey.
- The room air-conditioning segment is characterized by large players like Videocon, Carrier Aircon, LG, Samsung, Amtrex-Hitachi, etc. Videcon has been successful in the room AC segment, followed by Samsung and Hitachi, added the paper.
- The survey highlighted that with continuous humidity and soaring electricity rates, the sale of ACs, desert coolers have also picked up momentum in the northern and eastern regions.
- As per the survey the air-cooler market is currently at over 6 million units growing at the rate of 10-15 per cent as compared to the AC market, which is growing at 35-40% annually.
Our View:
- The survey results are significantly better than our channel checks and it thus boards well for companies like V-Guard Industries ( due to its stabilizer and inverter business) and Symphony Ltd ( for its air cooler business). Arun Baid of IDBI Capital currently have an ACCUMULATE rating on both these companies.
