The markets opened on a positive note but slipped lower in early trade only to bounce back and touch intra-day highs in the late morning session. Profit taking led the markets lower in the afternoon session; however the markets managed to close the day with minor gains. Among the sectoral indices consumer durables was the major loser while Healthcare gained. In the Sensex stocks Sun Paharma(2.03% ) , ONGC (1.78% ) , Bharti Airtel ( 1.78%) were the gainers while Dr Reddy's (2.66%), Bajaj Auto (1.87%) and Coal India (0.69%) were among the losers. The Sensex gained 31 points or 0.16% to close at 19,722 and the Nifty gained 15 points or 0.25% to close at 5,995.
Total traded turnover stood at Rs 168,660 cr. In equities FIIs were net buyers of (Rs 421 cr) while DIIs were net sellers (Rs 413 cr). On the derivatives side, FIIs were net buyers in Index Futures (Rs 324 cr) Index Options (Rs 273 cr) Stock Options (Rs 4 cr), while they were net sellers in Stock Futures (Rs 178 cr).
The US markets ended higher as stocks rallied on investor expectations of continued monetary stimulus from the Fed reserve to stimulate economic recovery. The Dow Jones gained 124 points or 0.82% to close 15,215 while the NASDAQ gained 24 points or 0.69% to close at 3,463.
The Asian markets are currently trading higher. Nikkei is trading higher by 2.32% while Hang Seng is trading higher by 0.51%.
Asian markets are trading higher as risk appetite of investors remains strong on the back of signs of improving US economy and yen's sharp fall due to easy monetary policy. Indian indices are expected to open on a positive note and global developments will be monitored closely for further direction.
