January 2011 cargo at major ports up 1% YoY, MICT volume up 30%
In January 2011 cargo traffic at major ports was 51.7mt, up 1% YoY and up 2% MoM. YTD cargo volume growth was muted at 1.1% YoY at 468mt.
POL volumes, which contributed ~30% to all-India cargo volumes, rose 3% in January to 15.7mt. Container volume grew by 8% and coal volumes grew by 5% YoY
Container cargo volumes at JNPT grew by 3% YoY to 4.8mt in January and all-India container traffic was up 7% YoY at 9.7mt.
In January 2011, six ports posted traffic growth, of which Haldia and Ennore were up 24.4% and 16.9% respectively boosted by POL and coal respectively.
In January container terminal volume at MICT increased 30% YoY to 55,666TEUs. ICD throughput at MICT increased 51% YoY to 13,231 TEUs against 8,713 TEUs a year earlier. January 2011 growth was mainly due to a low base in January 2010.
