Sushmar Swaraj addresses at FICCI's 82nd AGM

NEW DELHI, February 27, 2010. Ms. Sushma Swaraj, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, today envisioned a society free of hunger, fear and corruption, if India were to achieve the vision it had set out for itself by the year 2020.

Addressing the 82nd Annual General Meeting of FICCI, Ms. Swaraj said, "Our first priority is to strengthen the food security for the nation through a proper assessment of those below the poverty line, focus on increase farm productivity and production, scientific storage of food grains and an effective public distribution programme." To fight hunger and poverty, she said, the country needed a second green revolution.

The second big challenge before the nation, she said, was of addressing the threat of internal and external security. Half of India's districts were in the grip of terrorism and insurgency, she said, adding that the "pre-requisite for any industrial revolution was peace."

Ms. Swaraj said that corruption in public life had eaten into the vitals of the system and alleged that this was reflected in the slippages in power capacity addition and delay in the award of contracts for building national highways.

The Union Budget 2010, she said, was characterized by a mismatch between "vision, targets and allocation", adding that the budget proposals presented to Parliament of Friday "lacked vision, direction and sensitivity."
