The Central Government has made available 16.39 lakh tonne of sugar for the month of January, 2010. The Levy Sugar quota is 2.09 lakh tonnes.
Under Non- levy Sugar quota, Normal quota of 11.00 lakh tonnes is made available. The White/refined sugar processed out of imported raw sugar during November, 2009 is 1.80 lakh tonnes. The Expected availability from imported white sugar is 1.00 lakh tonnes and the availability on account of carryover from extension of December 2009 non-levy quota is 0.50 lakh tonnes.
The total quantity of 16.39 lakh tonne is sufficient to meet the internal demand of sugar for the month of January, 2010.
The Central Government vide notification dated 22.08.2009 has put restriction on large consumers of sugar to keep stocks of sugar and the notification has already come into effect on 19th September, 2009. Non-household sector consumers, which include large consumers, consume over 60% of non-levy sugar. As such, the availability of sugar for household sector during the month of January, 2010 is expected to be adequate.
