The President of India has conferred 'Bharat Ratna' award on Pandit Bhimsen Joshi.
In terms of usual practice, Panditji was requested to indicate his preference for coming to New Delhi to receive the decoration of the award of 'Bharat Ratna' from the President. It was, however, informed that on account of his frail health, Panditji is not in a position to travel to Delhi. Panditji, on his part, indicated his preference for receiving the award at his residence. He also requested that the presentation may be a low key affair without involving too many people.
Accordingly, in deference with the wishes of Panditji and his family members, the decoration of the award of Bharat Ratna, which comprises a Sanad (certificate) signed by the President of India and a medallion was conveyed and presented to Panditji in Pune today at his residence by Additional Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs. On this occasion, a commemorative brochure containing the citation and photograph of Panditji has also been released.
