Oracle named Leader in Worldwide Embedded Database Management Systems Vendor Share by Leading Market Research Firm

Redwood Shores, CA - January 22, 2009: Leading market research firm IDC states in its latest report, "Worldwide Embedded Database Management Systems 2007 Vendor Shares,"(1) that Oracle is the leading vendor with 26.3 percent of worldwide embedded DBMS software revenue.

Additionally, IDC notes that Oracle increased its vendor share lead over the previous year with annual growth of 26.0 percent. This growth rate is nearly double the overall growth of 13.8 percent for the industry as a whole.

IDC defines embedded database management systems (DBMS) as those sold to Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) or hardware device partners and used as components within larger software or hardware products developed by the partner.

IDC also notes that embedded DBMSs vary as widely as the applications in which they are embedded. In some cases, a small footprint is required; in other cases speed, in others scalability, and in still others broad support for many data types.

Oracle offers developers a broad selection of world-class embeddable database products to meet their specific application requirements, including:

- Oracle® Database -- for advanced relational database features in an embeddable package;

- Oracle TimesTen In-Memory Database -- for real-time, in-memory relational data management and caching;

- Oracle Berkeley DB -- for high performance, non-relational data management; and

- Oracle Database Lite -- for online/offline mobile and embedded relational data management.

- Requiring virtually no human administration, these products are ideal for developers in industries such as communications and high technology, which have demanding requirements for intelligent edge devices and services.

"Oracle continues to widen its vendor share lead in the Embedded Database space," said Rex Wang, vice president Product Marketing, Oracle. "With our broad portfolio of embedded databases, we are able to meet the requirements of many different types of software applications and hardware products. Oracle is committed to helping partners deliver a more complete, more competitive solution with lower cost, risk and development time."

"Leadership in the embedded space depends on good self-management features in the database software and strong support for ISV partners," said Carl Olofson, Research Vice President, Application Development and Deployment, IDC. "Oracle was the overall leader in the embedded DBMS market for 2007, and substantially increased its share over the prior year."
