Brightcom Group Limited (BSE: 532368 | NSE: BCG) proudly announces that Dr. Prahlada Ramarao, Padma Shri (2015) awardee, celebrated Defence scientist, and widely regarded as the Father of the Akash Missile, will be advising Mr. M. Suresh Kumar Reddy, Chairman & Managing Director of Brightcom Group, in the area of Defence.
Dr. Prahlad's distinguished career spans decades of pioneering contributions to India's Defence and aerospace programmes. He served as Distinguished Scientist & Chief Controller (R&D) at DRDO, where he was instrumental in the Integrated Guided Missile Development Program (IGMDP) and played a pivotal role in projects including Akash, BrahMos, Prithvi, Agni, and Nag missiles. He also served as Vice Chancellor of the Defence Institute of Advanced Technology (DIAT), Pune, and continues to mentor the next generation as Adjunct Faculty at the Department of Management, IISc Bengaluru.
The Akash missile system is perhaps the most defining achievement of Dr. Ramarao's career. While many scientists and engineers contributed, it is largely credited to his vision and leadership as Director of DRDL (Defence Research and Development Laboratory) at the time. He was instrumental in conceptualising and steering the project, which was initially called the Medium Range Surface-to-Air Missile System. Later, the name "Akash" (meaning Sky in Sanskrit) was bestowed by Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, then Director of DRDL. Today, Akash remains one of India's most reliable, indigenous, and operationally deployed missile systems - a testament to Dr. Ramarao's pioneering contributions.
In recognition of his lifelong service to the nation's defence and aerospace sector, Dr. Prahlada Ramarao was honoured with the Padma Shri in 2015, one of India's highest civilian awards.
Currently, Dr. Prahlada Ramarao serves as CIO of Hylenr Technologies Pvt Ltd (www.hylenr.com), President of the IISc Alumni Association, and Managing Trustee of the Trust for Advancement of Aerodynamics in India (TAAI). He is a Fellow of multiple prestigious scientific academies and institutions (FNAE, FIE, FAPAS, FTAS, FASI, FAeSI, FSWRI, FISSE, FIETE) and a Member of the Board of Governors, IIT Guwahati.
Commenting on this association, Dr. Prahlada Ramarao said: "I am pleased to advise Suresh and Brightcom Group at a time when the Defence sector is on the cusp of rapid technological transformation. Brightcom's strengths in data, digital infrastructure, and advanced technologies can be harnessed to effectively support national security objectives.
