Frontier Lifeline Hospital (FLL) and Dr. K. M. Cherian Heart Foundation performed a successful Single Lung Transplantation procedure on a 60 year old male from The Republic of Sudan.
Mr. Tarig Osman Humieda, a 60 year old from The Republic of Sudan was diagnosed with interstitial lung disease - a lung disease that affects the tissue and space around the air sacs of the lungs along with end stage severe Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH) - where the blood pressure in the pulmonary artery carrying blood from the heart to lungs is elevated. Lung transplant was the only option available for him at this end-stage.
Tarig Osman's family admitted him at Frontier Lifeline Hospital and he was registered under the Tamil Nadu State Cadaver Transplantation Programme.
On February 2nd 2016, Tarig Osman received a lung from a 48-year-old woman, who was declared dead after she met with a road accident at another Private hospital in Chennai. The lung was transported to Frontier Lifeline Hospital within a span of 10 mins starting at 3:59 AM and reaching the hospital at 4:09 AM. Dr. N. Madhu Shankar, Consultant - Cardiac Surgeon, along with his team performed the transplantation procedure that lasted for 4 hours.
Explaining about the transplantation, Dr. Sanjay Cherian, Vice - President, Frontier Lifeline Hospitalsaid, "Interstitial lung disease leads to respiratory failure and death in a significant number of patients. Mr Tarig Osman waited for almost 6 months in India for a transplant. He was lucky that we were able to find an appropriate donor for him at the right time. Hence we were able to undertake the lung transplantation successfully. He added that this disease was further aggravated in Mr Tariq Osman since he is chronic smoker for over 20-25 years. It further highlights the need for strict measures to control smoking like creating awareness in public about the ill effects of smoking".
Dr. Madhu Shankar, Consultant - Cardiac Surgeon said "The right lung was explanted and single lung transplantation was performed. Mr Tarig Osman recovered very well and is returning to his home country, Sudan, shortly".
