Indian-origin comedian Radhika Vaz's hit web series Shugs & Fats has won the Breakthrough Series - Short Form award at the 25th Annual Gotham Independent Awards. The event was hosted at the Cipriani Wall Street in downtown Manhattan, New York. Produced and created by Vaz and Brooklyn-based writer-performer Nadia P. Manzoor, Shugs & Fats is a contemporary satirical series about two Hijabi women clinging on to their heritage and culture in the midst of a westernized, modern Brooklyn civilization.
Expressing surprise and excitement at the honor, Vaz said, "We can't believe it. We wanted it. We wished for it. But we still can't believe it! I hope this means more people watch Shugs & Fats.
A number of critically acclaimed films and artists graced the winners' list at the ceremony, like Mark Ruffalo whose Spotlight received multiple awards, including the Best Feature and the Best Screenplay. The evening also saw many career tributes to prestigious artists such as Todd Haynes, Steve Golin, Robert Redford, and Helen Mirren.
