Indian Wines create history at the 2014 San Francisco International Wine Competition

KRSMA Estates, a premium boutique wine producer from Hampi Hills in Karnataka, has won several medals at the prestigious San Francisco International Wine Competition 2014 (SFIWC) held in June.

KRSMA Estates has become the first Indian winery to win a gold medal in any U.S. wine competition. The Sauvignon Blanc 2013 was awarded a Gold Medal with 91 points while the Cabernet Sauvignon 2012 was awarded a Silver Medal. Chardonnay 2013 and Sangiovese 2012 were both awarded Bronze Medals at this competition.

Judges at the 34th San Francisco International Wine Competition (SFIWC) reviewed 4,569 entries from over 30 countries during the competition which was held from June 20th through 22nd in San Francisco.

KRSMA Estates was established in 2007 by Krishna Prasad and Uma Chigurupati with the inception of their vineyards and had the first crush in 2010. The wines were officially launched in Bangalore in February 2014. KRSMA Estates has quickly established itself as a premier winery and has won numerous international awards at the U.K.-based Decanter World Wine Awards, touted the Olympics of Wines. The wines have gained international acceptance and won several awards at various noteworthy competitions around the world including International Wine and Spirit Competition 2014, New Zealand International Wine Show 2012, China Wine & Spirits Awards 2013, Honk Kong International Wine & Spirit Competition 2013, to name a few.

The boutique winery has an annual production of 2,000 cases. The Estate, comprising of winery and vineyard, is spread over 170 acres in Hampi Hills and pioneers in the region. KRSMA Estate wines have unique characteristics due to the iron-rich soil, minimal rainfall and cool nights at the winery.

"We are honoured to receive four medals at the SFIWC and take particular pride in being the first Indian winery to win an award in the U.S. It is a special honor to win a Gold Medal with 91 points for our Sauvignon Blanc and being rated at the same level as some of the great New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs, St. Claire and Spy Valley. These wines are prices at $20 in the US and this will help bench mark our wines in terms of quality and price, when we launch our wines in the New York before Christmas this year" said Krishna Prasad and Uma Chigurupati.

Krsma wines are currently available only in Bangalore and further Indian launces will be planned after New York.

KRSMA Estates, incidentally, are the first and only Indian winery to launch still wine magnum bottles (1500 ml) in open market. This hint of luxury is also reflected in their labels, inspired by the fabled kingdom of Vijayanagara. KRSMA Estate wines have been on the forefront of wining several accolades at the most prestigious awards for their premium wines. Bangalore holds its strong association with KRSMA wines as this is the city where they first started their sales and wines are exclusively available at.
