New Delhi, June 1, 2007: Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL), India’s largest auto exporter and the second largest car manufacturer, was today adjudged the Top Exporter of the Year for 2005-06 in the category of ‘Large Enterprises’ and presented the Gold Trophy at a function organized by the Engineering Export Promotion Council (EEPC). The Hon’ble Union Minister of Commerce, Mr Kamal Nath gave away the award to Hyundai Motor India, Managing Director Mr H S Lheem.
The Engineering Export Promotion Council is an apex industry body set up by the Ministry of Commerce. The awards are presented every year to corporate organisations that have shown outstanding achievements in the different categories. The ‘Large Enterprises’ category comprises of manufacturers with an export turnover of over Rs 150 crores. The EEPC awards which are over four decades old is one of the most respected export awards in the country.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr H S Lheem said: “We are honoured and delighted to receive this award, especially since it is a recognition of accomplishment from one of the highest bodies in the land and from the Ministry of Commerce itself. The honour accentuates our endeavour to be one of the major contributors to India’s rapidly growing economy, playing our part in India’s growth as an exporter.”
Hyundai Motor last year exported 113,339 cars to markets as diverse as Latin America, Middle East, European Union and Africa. Santro also known as the Atos Prime in many markets is the leading brand. The other models exported are the Accent and Getz. Currently, it exports about 35 per cent of its existing production to 67 countries. The commissioning of Hyundai’s second plant by the end of 2007 is expected to boost sales in the domestic market and double the export volume. HMI is aiming to increase its export levels to 50 per cent of its total production by 2008.
