Global Issues Week held at Canadian International School

The Canadian International School (CIS) Bangalore organized its annual Global Issues Week recently. It is one of the many initiatives of CIS undertaken every year to sensitize and educate ourselves about the different political, social, and economic problems confronting our planet. The school debated on global issues, developments and challenges that humanity faces as a whole.

The students were exposed to different environmental challenges, social, economic and political problems like human rights violations, dictatorial governments, unemployment, urban poverty, illiteracy, human trafficking, regional conflicts etc. Student of Secondary School represented different countries of ECOSOC (Economic and Social Council) in the Model United Nations. They debated and suggested solutions for the problems faced by minority communities around the world.

The various topics stressed on the need for protecting the fragile ecosystems which have bore the brunt of development and extensive commercialization. It was a melting pot of all cultures, as children from across the globe shared their opinions on various topics that need immediate attention such as biodiversity, renewable energy, environmental degradation, overpopulation etc.

As part of the Global Issues Week, CIS initiated an inter school debate competition. The topic of the debate this year was, "Were our ancestors luckier than us". The various schools which participated in the competition included Canadian International School, Bangalore International School and VidyaShilp Academy. VidyaShilp Academy stood first in the contest followed by CIS.

"We are aware of the Global Issues confronting us politically, socially and environmentally. Let us work together to bring changes which will make our place a better place to live in", said Fateh, a sixth grader.

"We are living in a high tech world" which our ancestors did not experience. said Ruben an eighth grader.

Mr. Shane Kells, Head of School, Canadian International School said "It is wonderful and heartening to see the level of compassion in our students". He also expressed his views about the various global issues, which are confronting humanity and commented on the challenges which lie ahead for the young leaders of tomorrow and the importance of debating in schools and international forums about these topics.
