The markets opened with a positive bias and edged higher in the morning session. The market witnessed volatility in the afternoon session and pared some of the gains before ending the day marginally higher. Among the sectoral indices Realty, Capital Goods & Power gained more than 1% while IT & Consumer Durables ended with moderate losses. In the Sensex stocks Tata Steel (2.49%), HUL (1.89%) and Sterlite Inds (1.76%) were the gainers while Jindal Steel (1.81%), Coal India (1.41%) and ONGC (1.35%) were among the losers. The Sensex gained 33 points or 0.17% to close at 19,501 and the Nifty gained 11 points or 0.18% to close at 5,898.
Total traded turnover stood at Rs 99,275 cr. In equities FIIs were net buyers of (Rs 143 cr) & DIIs were net sellers of (Rs 111 cr). On the derivatives side, FIIs were net sellers in Index Futures (Rs 416 cr), while they turned net buyers in Index Options (Rs 105 cr) Stock Futures (Rs 387 cr) Stock Options (Rs 60 cr).
The US markets were shut for trading due to holiday.
The Asian markets are trading marginally lower. Nikkei is trading lower by 0.04% while Hang Seng is trading lower by 0.08%.
Asian markets are trading in a range following a holiday in the US markets overnight. Indian indices are also expected to open on a flattish note and global developments will be monitored closely for further direction.
