Canadian International School students celebrates Joy of Giving Week

Students at the Canadian International School, Bangalore celebrated Joy of Giving Week from Oct 2nd - Oct 8th. As part of the celebration this year, the students scheduled a collection drive from 3rd - 5th October at the campus. All contributions and proceeds were donated to the "Missionaries of Charity" run by the Sisters of Mother Teresa which houses about 100 elderly women who have been abandoned by their families and autistic center, "BELAKU -School for Children with Special Needs".

The various items collected during the collection drive included 300 bathing soaps,250 mosquito coils,200 washing soaps,250 kgs of rice,200 kgs of daal,100 kgs of wheat flour,200 cupcakes,250 packets of biscuits,450 toothbrushes,400 toothpastes and cash contributions of Rs 29,000 . Wheel chairs and helping aids were also given to the autistic children of "Belakku". Students also visited the old age home at "Missionaries of Charity' in Venkatala and "Indira Gandhi International Academy" in Jakkur to distribute the items that were collected.

As part of community Initiative, every year, Canadian International School students teach English, Math, Computers, Science, Music, Theatre & Art every week to children at Venkatala Government School, Rakum blind school, Srilankan refugee school, Chaitanya Public School and APD (The Association Of People With Disability).Grade 12 students also teach Autistic children from Belaku, an NGO, who visit CIS on a weekly basis. In addition to teaching, CIS students & staff organize couple of charity drives throughout the year & distribute old / new clothes, stationery, snacks & toileteries to the schools.

It was amazing to see the manner in which "The Joy of Giving Week" aimed to engage the entire CIS community with the act of giving. Overall, the happiness on the faces of all the student organisers was so touching. I believe we can change the world with kindness - Priya Anand-CAS Coordinator.

The Joy of giving week has given us an opportunity to come together as one family, to work together, encourage others and celebrate the spirit of volunteerism for a wonderful cause - Venkat Krishna - IB Student.

I believe in Mahatma Gandhi's words -Be the change you want to see in the world", I want to be able to do that. I am happy to be one of the organisers for this event at our school as it has given me immense joy and happiness reaching out to the under-privileged - Danya - IB Student.

'The Joy of Giving Week not only aims at encouraging students to give but also celebrates the notion of giving and the joy derived from it. The idea is to imbibe the belief that it is more blissful to give than to receive.
