Tatanet, a division of Nelco Ltd; one of the Leading connectivity solution providers in India bagged an order from Oil & Natural Gas Corporation Ltd (ONGC), to enhance the communication infrastructure of their Western Offshore site. The Rs 41.6 crore order will augment voice and data communication requirement between ONGC's offshore installations and its base station office in Mumbai and provide back up network for existing C band Satellite network.
The Western Offshore oil and gas field bears large producing assets of ONGC. The rapid development in TCP/IP technology and usage of internet and mail has Increased the requirement of satellite bandwidth at their offshore locations. The new network solution from Tatanet is aimed to provide additional communication bandwidth for present and upcoming voice a data application, as well as establish a back-up to their existing C-band satellite Link. The proposed KU-band based network will be an integrated satellite network with a complete solution for broadband IP connectivity, providing Quality of Services (QOS) on an end-to-end basis.
Tatanet will provide connectivity via VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal) to over 34 offshore, and seven onshore locations. The offshore locations Include 13 process complexes, nine rigs and five MSVS; while the onshore locations include a captive hub at ONGC's base office in Mumbai and a Disaster Recovery (DR) hub at Chennai, apart from other sites. Aside from the satellite connectivity, HF/VHF sets will be deployed for Long distance and voice/ telex communication with the base and vessels, and Aero VHF sets for communication with helicopters.
INMARSAT terminals will also be deployed at all off shore locations to provide additional voice facility. The scope of the order includes design, engineering, supply, installation, commissioning, integration and project management for establishing the network. Said Mr. Zal Engineer, Executive Director, Tatanet, Nelco Ltd said, "We at Tatanet have always been committed to excellence and innovation as an end-to-end solutions provider. We are very honoured and pleased that ONGC, the Largest Oil & Gas Company in India, has expressed confidence in us for fulfilling their complete connectivity needs, and we are sure that with our expertise in the area of satellite connectivity and network integration, we will exceed their expectations. Based on leading satellite access technologies, Tatanet's network would be capable of handling fast data rates, and will provide highly reliable, scalable and bandwidth efficient solutions for voice, data & video transmission over IP."
Failure of one system, the total traffic (Voice & data) will be automatically shifted to the other VSAT. In case of failure of both VSATs on one platform, all traffic will be transmitted to the nearest platform through the point to point Microwave link, from where it is transmitted to the Base. Inmarsat Satellite phones will be set up to assure communication during calamities or emergency conditions. VHF / HF and Aero VHF links will facilitate additional voice links with the base offices at Mumbai.
The main hub at Mumbai, and the DR hub in Chennai, would consist of a hub antenna with auto tracking units, base band equipment, network control system and a network management system (NMS). The DR hub would automatically take over network operations in case of any unprecedented failure of the hub at Mumbai. Apart from this, the five MSV specialized vessels, and the two floater rigs will be connected with the base office.
State-of-the art gyro stabilized antennas will be used to ensure communication even in extreme weather conditions. This comprehensive customized network solution also includes supplying of routers, switches, EPABX systems, and a fibre optic cable connecting offshore locations. Not only does the network have the ability to work on Ku-Band of any geostationary satellite, but it also has a single hop hybrid network connectivity; supporting broadband multimedia, intranet, internet and IT applications like SAP, SCADA, etc.; using the Latest telecommunication standards and efficient space segment access.
